RVCA is an apparel company with a heritage derived from the surf, skate and art scenes. Although the company makes all kinds of clothing, it is undoubtedly most recognized for its signature T shirts that showcase designs from both up-and-coming and accomplished modern artists, including underground graffiti writers.

RVCA was able to distinguish itself from many of its competitors by going beyond the usual positioning of an alternative sports label; aligning itself with the rising artist community. Because of this, the brand is just as commonly seen in high-end outlets as it is in skate shops.

The brand received a significant amount of publicity when it teamed up with Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo for several pieces of clothing.

Here’s a look at the History of RVCA:

 - PM Tenore, the company’s founder, is dissatisfied with the marketing and design limitations prevalent in extreme sportswear.

 - Tenore develops the RVCA brand’s original concept: Establish a design-based label that fits seamlessly into an active lifestyle.

 - Conan Hayes, a successful surfer and childhood friend of Tenore, gives up an opportunity to have a professional surfing contract to help Tenore make his dream a reality.

 - Both men agree that the brand they are creating is going to be representative of synergy - the increased potential two groups have to be successful when they work together.

 - This goal is realized through the ANP - Artist Network Program - an initiative of RVCA’s that highlights the work of emerging and popular artists by incorporating their designs in RVCA clothing. RVCA donates a potion on the proceeds from the sale of these items to a charity the artist chooses.

The “V” in RVCA is actually a “U”. It is written in an old-style Roman script that makes the “U” look like a “V”. Every now and then RVCA clothing will feature the name in a different script where it is obvious that the actual name is “Ruca” - meaning “clothing” in Greek.
